Alliance to End Hunger Applauds Confirmation of Mark Green as USAID Head

August 4, 2017

WASHINGTON DC, August 4, 2017 – The Alliance to End Hunger applauds the United States Senate’s confirmation of Amb. Mark Green as Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

“Our congressional tenures overlapped a couple of years, and I have had multiple opportunities to speak with Mark Green in his roles as both a Congressman and a US Ambassador. I was always struck by his genuine compassion and dedication to helping people in need” says Amb. Tony Hall, Executive Director Emeritus of the Alliance to End Hunger. “With USAID under the direction of an individual of his caliber, I feel positive about the agency’s outlook.”

Amb. Mark Green was a United States Congressman from Wisconsin from 1999 until 2007, when he was tapped by then-President George W. Bush to be the U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania. He served in the role until 2009.  President Donald J. Trump nominated Mark Green to the chief USAID position earlier this year.  Well known for his professionalism, bipartisan work, and sincere interest in foreign assistance, Amb. Green’s nomination was praised by many international aid and development organizations in the United States and abroad.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which Amb. Green now leads, is the United States government’s chief global relief and development agency. USAID is a central player in the U.S. government’s Feed the Future initiative and Global Food Security Strategy.  These programs pull millions of small-scale farmers and rural communities out of poverty, and provide life-saving nutrition interventions mothers and children.  From 2013 to 2016, the Alliance to End Hunger was awarded a USAID grant to work with civil society coalitions in six Feed the Future Countries to build their capacities to meaningfully influence food security, nutrition, and agricultural policy processes.

“Achieving the mission of the Alliance to End Hunger is made easier when dedicated experts lead the agencies most relevant to our work,” stated Rebecca Middleton, Executive Director of the Alliance to End Hunger. “And in this regard, it is great to have an ally like Amb. Green in his new role.”
