May 5, 2017

On May 5, 2017, Executive Director Emeritus Amb. Tony Hall thanked Congress for nearly $1 billion in famine relief in a FY17 budget bill.  These funds are to be directed towards efforts to alleviate suffering in areas currently experiencing or threatened by famine (South Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia, Yemen).  Below are his statement and video.

Hi everyone. This is Ambassador Tony Hall. I’m a former Member of Congress and the Executive Director Emeritus of the Alliance to End Hunger. Today, I want to extend a special ‘thank you’ to the legislators in Congress who voted to pass a budget that provides nearly $1 billion to save the lives of people who are starving to death in places in places threatened by famine. You have taken a stand to defend the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable, and I commend you.

I know as a former Member [of Congress] that you don’t often get thanked, but I thank you. I also want to then the members of the Alliance to End Hunger and all of you who have reached out to your members of Congress to show them the reality of hunger in this world. And you should feel confident that in doing this, you had a hand in saving the lives of a mother, a father, a child, and countless others.

Keep up this outstanding work, and thank you very much.
