Alliance to End Hunger Praises Passage of Resolution Encouraging Continued U.S. Leadership in Global Nutrition

December 7, 2020

WASHINGTON (December 7, 2020) – The following statement is attributable to Eric Mitchell, Executive Director of the Alliance to End Hunger:

“On behalf of the Alliance to End Hunger, I congratulate the House of Representatives on the passing of H.Res. 189 – ‘Recognizing the importance of sustained United States leadership to accelerating global progress against maternal and child malnutrition and supporting United States Agency for International Development’s commitment to global nutrition through its multi-sectoral nutrition strategy.’”

“We know the burden that malnutrition puts on vulnerable families around the world, as well as the renewed urgency of addressing this issue during the pandemic. IFPRI estimates that COVID-19 and its fallout could push an additional 140 million people into extreme poverty, and WFP warns the crisis could more than double the amount of people facing acute food insecurity.  In addition to the urgent need, we are also witnessing glaring inequities in our food and nutrition systems worldwide.”

“The Alliance to End Hunger congratulates its many members, partners, and friends for working together to make this resolution a reality. We look forward to continuing to work with Congress and the current and future Administrations to realize a world free from hunger and malnutrition.”
