Alliance to End Hunger Statement on the Passing of Senator Bob Dole

December 6, 2021

WASHINGTON (December 6, 2021) The following statement is attributed to Eric Mitchell, Executive Director of the Alliance to End Hunger.

The Alliance to End Hunger both mourns the loss and celebrates the life and legacy of the late Senator Bob Dole, who passed away on December 5. Senator Dole was a champion for those who struggled to put food on the table in the United States and around the world.

In the United States, Senator Dole led efforts to expand the Food Stamp program (now known as SNAP) and increased the reach of school meal programs. He also played a key role in founding the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). Globally, Senator Dole – partnering with his friend and colleague Senator George McGovern – advocated for the creation of what became the McGovern-Dole Food for Education Program. This initiative has served millions of school-aged children around the world and has played a key role in incentivizing families to send girls to school.

A stalwart leader of the Republican party, Senator Dole understood the value and necessity of reaching across the aisle for the sake of hungry people everywhere. Senator Dole’s legacy as a leader in food security and nutrition policy will not be forgotten, and we have no doubt that he will continue to serve as a role model for those of us seeking to end hunger everywhere.”
