Sue Schram, Association for International Agriculture and Rural Development
The Association for International Agriculture and Rural Development (AIARD) is a professional association of individuals and organizations representing the public and private sectors, universities, NGOs, corporations, cooperatives, students, and others from around the world who are engaged in global agricultural development and hunger alleviation.
AIARD is dedicated to:
- Advocating for global food security and increasing the awareness of the instrumental role of agriculture in global development;
- Informing policy makers, donors and institutions about effective strategies to advance agriculture and rural development in the global economy;
- Improving relationships between agriculture and other development efforts to promote a sustainable global society (e.g. natural resources, health and nutrition, youth development, gender, democratization)
- Promoting interaction and cooperation among organizations engaged in global food security
AIARD provides its members with an opportunity for professional networking and friendship; a way to make their voices heard in the Washington policy arena; access to reliable information and continuing education; and it is a way to nurture the pipeline of international agricultural and rural development professionals.
Each year AIARD holds its Annual Conference along with its Future Leader’s Forum (FLF), in Washington, DC. The FLF brings 12 outstanding competitively selected U.S. university students to join the association for its conference and a tour following the meeting of prospective employers in global food security. The focus of the June 3-5th, 2018 AIARD conference is: Business “Un”usual: Aligning Critical Intersections of Food, Agriculture, and Health.
AIARD looks forward to working closely with the Alliance and its members, particularly on education and advocacy. AIARD recently published SMART Investments in International Agriculture and Rural Development: Recommendations to the New Administration and Congress (July, 2017). This report is intended to inform decisions that the Administration, Congress, and the American public will make as agriculture priorities, the 2018 Farm Bill, and food and nutrition security foreign assistance programs are discussed and debated. AIARD recommends taking urgent action to maintain the positive momentum in global food and nutrition security progress following the world food crisis in 2007-2008 and to increase U.S. support for work in international agriculture and rural development.
