WASHINGTON (March 25, 2024) The following statement is attributed to Eric Mitchell, President of the Alliance to End Hunger.
“The Alliance to End Hunger thanks Congress for passage of the latest “minibus” spending package. We are exceptionally grateful that legislators were able to ensure that drastic cuts were largely averted from lifesaving food and nutrition programs. However, funding for programs aimed at alleviating the hunger crisis continue to be insufficient. With famine threatening Gaza and Sudan, as well as continuing hunger crises in places like Haiti and Afghanistan, the world demands more than flat funding for nutrition programs. Decreasing the Global Food Security account – even by a little – is unacceptable at a time like this.
We urge Congress to do more. Namely, there is a crucial Emergency Supplemental package containing lifesaving funds waiting for passage. Congress must pass this bill without delay.
The United States has historically been a global leader against hunger and malnutrition. We have an opportunity to build on this role, but only if Congress takes this issue seriously. The Alliance looks forward to working with legislators and the Administration as we aim to end hunger and malnutrition across the globe.”
