WASHINGTON (February 27, 2025) Last night the Trump Administration announced the cancellation of 90 percent of humanitarian and development contracts administered through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Department of State. Among the cancellations were contracts for lifesaving food and nutrition assistance, including those previously granted waivers to continue work following a “work freeze” order.
The Alliance to End Hunger strongly opposes these draconian and life-threatening actions. Food and nutrition assistance and development has generated strong bipartisan support through the years not only due to its lifesaving potential, but for its clear ability to stabilize vulnerable countries and regions, open markets to U.S. producers and researchers, and promote our own international leadership on the global stage.
With 750 million people worldwide facing hunger, including millions facing famine conditions in the midst of the worst food crisis in decades, now is not the time to play politics with actual lives and families around the globe. We urge Congress and the Administration in the strongest possible terms to not let our historic commitment to food security and nutrition fall by the wayside.
