Community Food Advocates spearheads the Lunch 4 Learning campaign. It was formed to fight for NYC to adopt universal free school lunch. In 2017 we were successful and got Free School Lunch For All adopted for all NYC public schools. The coalition continues strong and is focused on effective implementation and our high impact policy platform to build upon the foundation of free school meals for all.
We are also spearheading the Good Food Purchasing Policy campaign whose goal is to develop a robust, values-based food procurement policy that would set a framework and concrete goals for all NYC’s food-serving agencies to use their enormous purchasing power to benefit the local and regional food system, along all points of the food chain. GFPP focuses on 5 value areas: health and nutrition, environmental sustainability, valued workforce, local and regional economies, and animal welfare. NYC public schools, hospitals, senior centers, etc. serve 240 million meals per year.
