WASHINGTON (April 22, 2026) The following statement was released by Eric Mitchell, president of the Alliance to End Hunger, following the release of the House Agriculture Appropriations FY27 bill:
Countless families in the United States and around the world are struggling to get the food they need for themselves and their families. Conflict abroad is spurring emergencies while raising costs for food and agriculture across the globe, and continued economic uncertainty is continuing to put a strain on the limited resources of those most in need of food assistance. It is in this context that the House Agriculture Appropriations subcommittee released a bill that fails to alleviate these burdens.
The proposed bill would cut an unconscionable $200 million of food assistance from mothers and children on the WIC program and does not include making permanent the current flexibilities that help WIC families access services. It would also cut $6.2 billion from SNAP, following through with the immense and unprecedented cuts already faced by the program through last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Globally, the bill would cut a drastic 25 percent from Food for Peace at a time when worldwide hunger emergencies are spiking, and the availability of emergency food is in doubt.
Hungry people and families cannot afford to shoulder the burden of decreasing federal spending. The Alliance to End Hunger will continue to work with Members of Congress to find a way to advance crucial agriculture policies and also provide food assistance that people need.
