House of Representatives Budget Resolution Could Damage Fight to End Hunger Everywhere

WASHINGTON (February 26, 2025) The following statement is attributed to Eric Mitchell, president of the Alliance to End Hunger.

“Last night the House of Representatives passed a damaging budget resolution which, if implemented, could set our efforts to end hunger back by years. With over 47 million people in the United States struggling to put food on the table and over 750 million people worldwide suffering from hunger, the last thing we need is cuts to critical and lifesaving food and nutrition programs. Overall, the resolution sets the stage for dramatic cuts to domestic and global food and nutrition programs. In the U.S. people and families reliant on SNAP are in the crosshairs, with what could amount to a $230 billion cut to the program over the next decade. Globally, hungry and malnourished people already reeling from U.S. assistance freezes could have insult added to injury as global food and nutrition relief and development programs such as Food for Peace and McGovern-Dole find their way to the chopping block.

As the budget process continues through Congress, the Alliance and our members and partners will continue to demand a budget that does not put our nation and world’s food security at further risk. There are better ways to balance the budget and reduce our debt than through punishing those fighting to feed their families.”
