WASHINGTON (June 23, 2026) The following statement was issued by Eric Mitchell, president of the Alliance to End Hunger, following the release of the Senate Agriculture Committee’s text of the Farm Bill:
“Stress and uncertainty continue to define life for millions of families and communities facing hunger in the United States and around the world. Food and fuel prices remain high, inflation is rising again, and last year’s reconciliation budget legislation is pushing millions off critical nutrition assistance. The Senate Farm Bill proposal released today does nothing to decrease hunger and will continue to drive state governments toward impossible decisions to keep or cut critical basic needs programs.
“Chief among our concerns is the proposal’s failure to reflect the current reality facing SNAP participants. Millions of people have already lost access to this critical support, which has deepened food insecurity nationwide. Additional barriers and bureaucratic requirements will increase hunger and make life harder for people already experiencing it. New cost-sharing requirements that shift more responsibility for funding SNAP benefits to state and local governments are simply unworkable.
“For decades, the Farm Bill has been an essential connection between agriculture and food security. It is alarming to see that relationship weakened at the expense of those most in need of food assistance. The Alliance to End Hunger will continue working to ensure that any final legislation prioritizes people facing hunger.”
