WASHINGTON (May 2, 2025) The Alliance to End Hunger is alarmed by the drastic cuts proposed to food and nutrition programs in the President’s Budget Request for FY 2026. The document, released by the White House on Friday, requests elimination of key programs and a fundamental retreat from food and nutrition security as national priorities. The Alliance to End Hunger urges Congress to continue its historical commitment to the wellbeing of food insecure individuals and families.
The President’s Budget recommends eliminating key global food security programs including Food for Peace and McGovern-Dole Food for Education. Food for Peace is the United States’ longest-standing food assistance program and partners American farmers and their products with emergency food security and development outcomes around the world. Food for Peace responds to emergency situations due to conflict and natural disasters and helps to build up more resilient communities in the face of shocks. McGovern-Dole Food for Education provides food assistance as a means of increasing educational opportunity overseas – especially for girls – and has garnered longstanding bipartisan support and praise for its achievements in supporting both education and nutrition around the world.
In the midst of the worst global food crisis in decades, this is not the time to cut and dismantle critical food and nutrition programs with proven records of success. The Alliance to End Hunger acknowledges that this is the beginning of a long process, and we will be working with and urging both the Administration and Congress to make food and nutrition key pillars of American policy in the US and abroad, and not casualties in a continuing retreat from the needs of millions of hungry people around the world.
